To Geoff, Kevan, Neil and Family:
From here in Canada and from the USA, we extend our heartfelt condolences to you on the passing of Hazel. She was a lovely, kind, happy, and devoted women who loved her family deeply.
When the Toplis' moved in beside us, to what was then the nice new house, we were surprised they were from England. Mom and Hazel were firm friends from day one. They were frequently leaning over the white plank fence chatting about family and anything else. Hazel's constant calls of duckey' had my sisters and I in much laughter.
It could not have been an easy move for her away from her Dad (Mr. Moon) and the homeland of Derbyshire. Her friendship with Mom helped her much in those early months and years.
She helped my eldest sister Audrey with her singing lessons, and took huge risks by allowing Kevan, Neil and I to use her coal storage as cricket wickets.
Dad and Geoff went fishing often back then, and we remember the help the Toplis' were in getting my greenhouse started.
We moved from the bungalow next door in around ‘73 and emigrated in ‘76. Hazel and Mom still kept in touch. The occasional letter, card and annual Christmas card kept their connection, and Mum always thinks fondly her best friend next door.
My wife Jin and I saw Hazel last summer. It was a good visit, and her ready smile was still present. We are glad we saw her that last time. It brought back so many happy memories of our lovely neighbour.
