Noel was one of a kind. He dedicated his life to teaching and inspiring young people. I am indebted to him for the great start he gave me in my life. He opened my horizons to the benefits of outdoor pursuits like orienteering and trekking for example through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. He also inspired me personally to pursue my scientific interests and due to him I had a career I loved in the energy industry travelling the world. We always stayed in touch and met regularly for the odd lunch and catch up or at an orienteering event. He always had a ready quip about a forgotten memory to lighten up every encounter. When I think of Noel I am thankful for having known him and to have befitted from his wise counsel and guidance.
