Martin made sustained and central contributions to the study of Irish cinema, a distinguished academic career.
A kind and avuncular man who will be missed by many. Friday 06 October 2023 Rod Stoneman, Killeenaran, County Galway.

Sincere condolences to Cindy and his three daughters who Martin was always so proud of, Mrs McLoone and the wider McLoone family on Martin's untimely passing. Martin was an pre-eminent scholar and author on film, music and media in general and shared his passion with generations of students and staff. He also was the Head of School at Ulster University who spearheaded the introduction of journalism at the university. Today 26 years on from when he started it, Coleraine has become a UK and Irish centre of excellence in journalism drawing undergraduate and post-graduate students from England, Ireland as well as further afield. Over 800 journalists have been educated at Coleraine and are making a major contribution to public life through their journalism. It is a great legacy to Martin's vision that he was proud of.
Martin was a man of strong principle, very encouraging, inclusive and a fair colleague as well as being great fun. His contribution to his field through his books are a unique analysis of Ireland's cultural flourishing. But what he was more proud of than anything else was his and Cindy's great family whom he loved dearly. He is no longer by your side but will be in your hearts and our gratitude forever. Wednesday 04 October 2023 Dr Colm Murphy and the Journalism team past and present at Ulster University, Coleraine
